Essentials: Dear Baby’s Melissa

1. Burts bees chapstick: What do they put in this stuff? I’m such a burts bees junkie that I have to have one on my nightstand, one in my purse and one on my desk at the office at all times. I go into panic mode if I find myself with it. Are there such things as chapstick-aholics? If so, this is my first step in admitting I have a problem.

2. Fur lined moccasin slippers: I asked for these for Christmas a few years ago. Normally I never know what to say when my husband asks what I want for gifts – but that year, I knew exactly what I wanted and stated it very matter of factly. I would like a pair of fur lined, suede moccasin slippers. As Christmas approached I looked forward to wearing my new slippers on Christmas day while sipping eggnog, but when all of the gifts had been opened I discovered that the one thing I’d requested wasn’t among them. It didn’t say anything because I didn’t want to be ungrateful – but oh! The slippers! My dreamy, comfy slippers! Later that day, I made a comment about how much I still really wanted a pair of fur lined slippers. Hubby felt so bad for forgetting that he bravely agreed to venture out with me the day after Christmas to fight off the massive crowds and find me the perfect pair. I’ve worn them constantly since. There is nothing better to slide on a chilly morning or after a long day in uncomfortable heels!

3. The perfect tea cup: Mine is porcelain, with a tall cup and decorated with little red strawberries. I bought it for 1 dollar at a neighborhood yard sale and it has become part of my favorite morning ritual. I love sipping hot tea, the steam twisting off the brim of the cup and holding the delicate handling between my fingers.

4. Mascara: You can have everything else. The concealers to cover my dark under eye circles (don’t judge, I have a teething 10 month old!), the pretty lipsticks and sparkly shadows – but leave me my mascara! I have blonde lashes that are virtually invisible without a good, healthy swipe of dark mascara and lately my toned down makeup routine has been a little face moisturizer, a dab of bursts bees (of course), a little mascara for my lashes. It’s my favorite beauty product, hands down.

5. Footy pajamasNot for me, silly. On my daughter. I’ve decided there is no better article of clothing that a child can wear. They exaggerate their little buddha bellies and bubbled diaper butts – they’re always so soft and make snuggling extra sweet. They don’t make footy pajamas for older children, and so I’m savoring my daughter’s time wearing them . I really, truly love these sweet, snuggly, footy pajama years.

6. Chai: Not just any chai. Oregon chai brand and 2% organic milk. Mix them half and half – heat it up or pour it over ice and for a few moments, all is right with the world. I used to pay $3 a cup for it until I discovered the mix in my local grocery store. Now I have my chai fix whenever I want. The only thing that makes it tastes even better is drinking it steamy hot out of my strawberry tea cup!
