Sulla Mode: Dress Up? But Baby It’s Cold Outside

I have never been very good at dressing up for the various wintertime events that pop up everywhere this time of year.  I’ve got the whole cool, cozy “anything goes with boots” thing locked down, but getting fancy in the cold is a skill I lack.  Whether it be a swanky New Year’s shindig or an early January wedding, I always feel clueless on how to dress so that I look stylish enough without freezing my arse off.  I’ve never bought into the whole “beauty is pain” mentality, so comfort is always tops on my list of wardrobe choices.  However, I have never been able to blend comfort and chicness to pull off winter fancy.

When I think of dressing up in the winter time my mind darts immediately to winters living in Chicago, when I was young, wearing awful plaid and velvet dresses, squeaky black patent leather shoes, and white tights that had a crotch that would slide down at least 2-3” from where it was supposed to be.  Sorry, but you all know that’s the truth.  For some reason, if I don’t have someone helping me or lending me the full outfit, I end up contemplating pulling from my box of tacky gems that I wear each year to our annual Dress Like Your Parents Christmas party.  And that’s not pretty.

Luckily there are tons of figure flattering dresses, sparkly skirts, and soft stylish sweaters out this winter to help those who get attire anxiety when opening invitations to holiday festivities.  Here are just a few elegant and sexy pieces you can mix and match to create a look for each occasion on your calendar.  You will look like the savvy, season-appropriate dresser that you are. Wink wink.

Vintage and Christmas parties go hand in hand in my mind for some reason (without the tacky).  Think Don Draper in a Santa Claus hat…Meeeeow! Do vintage the tasteful way with these pieces from TopShop. 1. Midnight Glare Dress 2. Pleat Panel Bodycon 3. Silk Stud Velvet 4. Pearl Swirl 5. Strappy Black Platform 6. Cherry Heels 7. Bead Headband

Get glammed up for your midnight smooch with these sparkly things from Freepeople.  Whether you rock a short metallic mini or take the plunge with this backless beaded dress, both can be topped off with this cozy white cardigan and heels for an “I didn’t try hard at all to look this smokin’” look.  1. Sequins 2. Fuzzy 3. Bauble 4. Shimmer 5. Earrings

Modcloth offers some of my favorite dresses for this season right now.  I love how their garments stay true to the vintage spirit but also stay hip with a modern edge.  1. Black and Gold 2. Glimmer 3. Evergreen 4. Clutch 5. Diamonds and Pearls

Happy Party Season to all!
